Migrating Resonances is an immersive sound installation and performance piece that captures the vibrant, chaotic and dynamic atmosphere of Peruvian markets through the movement of loudspeakers. By recording and spatially manipulating the sounds of these markets, the project explores how sound can embody cultural identity, community interaction and social exchange. The installation integrates real-time synthesis, processed field recordings and the concept of sound as a moving object, creating a multi-sensory experience that reflects the unique sonic landscape of Peruvian markets.

In early 2023, Luis Sanz spent three months in Peru exploring local sounds, particularly those of Lima's popular markets and fairs. These markets have long been cultural meeting places, crucial to urban employment, and have expanded due to internal migration from rural areas to the city. They promote both formal and informal trade and serve as the social core of neighbourhoods in Peruvian cities.
Sanz uses these field recordings and transforms them digitally. The sounds of street vendors, preachers, musicians and others are mixed with computer-generated synthetic sounds to create micro-narratives. The project aims to represent these markets sonically and capture their essence as vibrant social hubs. The movement of the loudspeakers will reflect the dynamic nature of these spaces, symbolising the flow of people, goods and cultural exchange.
